Chateau La Cardonne, once owned by famous 1st Growth Chateau Lafite, is a historic, high quality Cru Bourgeois Superior vineyard located in the North of the Medoc near St. Estephe. They are the home for high quality Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot.
La Cardonne is an amazing state-of-the-art winery and cellar that have been built under the 18th century Chateau. We first visited and tasted there in 2019, and were amazed at the overall quality and once here, the incredible value for money (with no ‘middleman’ in this case), with all the wines being well under the $50 mark.
The Chateau also make wines from neighbouring vineyards Chateau Ramafort and Chateau Griviere - again both of outstanding quality in the region. All three have drunk superbly and been incredibly well received since we introduced them (way back) in 2019.
All are from outstanding recent vintages with a
terrific range of international reviews including Wine Spectator and Decanter- (see below), which is always encouraging!

Gold Medal Bordeaux.

2019 Chateau La Cardonne
 92 Points Decanter
"Deep ruby in colour with lovely violet reflections. A classic young Médoc mix of black fruits, menthol and tannins with good grip, fairly high acidity, plenty of appellation signature and potential. Enjoyable with touches of smoked cedar. Close to an equal split of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with a good dash of Petit Verdot that makes its presence felt."

91 points Wine Enthusiast “Smoothly accessible. Ripe black-currant fruits and smoky tannins”
91 points James Suckling “Rich and creamy with a vivid finish. Drink or hold. "
Gold Medal Concours Feminalises

WINEDOCTOR
91-93 Points
‘Aromatically it is dominated by scents of crushed black cherry fruit, crushed damson, smoke and dried black olive’

DECANTER
91 Points
This is excellent, one of the value stars of AOC Médoc in 2020’

2017 Chateau La Cardonne
This La Cardonne is ‘classic Bordeaux’! At 7 years age, its drinking delightfully now with plenty of cassis (black currant) to the fore. It's medium to full bodied and carries its fruit well now especially with food. Ideal for now, but will cellar 3-4 year hence  (Our note- 93 points)

2018 Chateau Ramafort
92 points Wine Enthusiast
"From a vineyard once owned by Lafite-Rothschild. Rich tannins are polished and smoothly textured, belying the firm backdrop of tannins. Fruity now, the wine is worth waiting for. Drink from 2024."
91 points Decanter  "Dark chocolates, Juicy ripe blueberries on palate”

2019 Chateau Ramafort
90 points Wine Enthusiast
"Based around a 13th-century castle, this estate has produced a full, generously textured wine that offers touches of wood aging and already delicious blackberry fruits. Drink from 2024."
92-93 points James Suckling  "Very intense with blackberry and light chocolate character"

2020 Chateau Ramafort
JAMES SUCKLING

JAMES SUCKLING
89-90 Points
‘Dark fruit and a coffee-tinged barrel undertone.’

2019 Chateau Griviere
Roger Voss Wine Enthusiast 91 points Cellar Selection 60% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon After 18 months aging, this wine now shows its class. Ripe tannins, red fruits and a good structure all point to a wine that will age. This balanced wine will be ready from 2024.
Decanter Magazine  90 points “Smooth red fruits, some oak toasting evident, soft tannins
James Suckling 90 points “Character here is of plum, chocolate with some hazelnut."

2018 Chateau Grivière
Roger Voss Wine Enthusiast 91 points This powerful, Merlot-dominated wine shows great concentration and richness. The density is enhanced by the core of dark tannins while leaving plenty of room for the blackberry and dark-plum flavors. This will be an attractive wine, but wait until 2024.
Decanter Magazine 89 points Purple damson fruit and distinct cinnamon spice on the attack with a slatey mid-palate. Lovely acidity with licks of liquorice and wet stone on the finish give nuance.
